From our first lessons, teaches us that there is a way of speaking and writing otherwise. When we write, we are supposed to use more formal words, the terms technical and abstract names, words often as it may sound more impressive. I never get told to write. An article I wrote 30 years ago magazine, was rejected because I wrote most of the first person "I" because the piece came from a personal story.
But sales and marketing materials, including web pages and direct mail pieces, we can avoid these rules most of the time and write informally. The main exception is to write pieces for corporate clients, which may require us to use a more formal, but not always.
The reason that the use of informal language sales copy and the official language of, say, an instruction manual is the role of emotions in each type of writing. No role of emotion in an instruction manual, either in print or on the web, because the instructions are objective and unchanging. What we have to do when you follow the instructions to use our new iPhone does not depend on how we feel about it, but to follow the instructions correctly.
Sales of materials work only in the opposite direction. In addition to the buyer information enough about the product and payment, a sales letter is about an even more important job – to arouse emotions of the reader enough to make him or her wishes buy.
The way is to make our very personal call, or writing a letter home talkative, or chatting on the Internet or on your phone cell. That's why we use informal language in the sales charts.
Maybe you're still not convinced. Maybe you're thinking of formal language effectively may be in the appeals to charity, in political speeches, or sermons. Perhaps you remember Martin Luther King "I have a dream speech." That's not was informal, but powerful enough to be remembered to this day. I thought a lot about this issue. Surely they know both sides. I had to write in a language dry, formal in my thesis research. And my book, The Panorama of America, at the same time easy to read, not written in the style of a letter.
The answer I've come up with is this. When people hear the official rhetoric of the speeches and sermons, they know that, in a sense, are being sold and do not care. They want their beliefs to be confirmed by the speaker on the platform or the preacher in the pulpit. You may have already taken a decision to donate to a cause or campaign and turned to the Internet or a demonstration for this purpose. But when people read or listen to a sales pitch, with little or no prior beliefs about the product, and may have doubts and objections. They also know that at some point will have to pay money.
